Inside: Learn the authentic way of making Pico de Gallo, which goes great with so many Mexican dishes, including tamales.

Tamales and Pico de gallo are both staples of Mexican cuisine. Today I am going to show you the authentic way to make pico de gallo and how you can use it to top some delicious Del Real Foods Cheese and Green Chili Tamales. Although I like to make my own tamales, sometimes they can take a lot of time and effort. If you don’t want to make your own pico de gallo or salsa, you can buy Del Real salsa at your local retailer!
A few weeks ago my oldest son turned 10 and we had a taco bar outside with some family and friends. To go with the tacos, I served the Del Real tamales too and they were a hit! They are easy to heat up and serve at any gathering.
When I don’t have time for that, I am glad that I have Del Real tamales on hand which only take a couple of minutes to be ready! Del Real Foods tamales are made with sustainable wraps instead of corn husks.
What are Del Real’s Sustainable Wraps?
The sustainable wraps deliver the same great flavor as traditional wraps, but they avoid sanitary risks and promote sustainability. By using these wraps, Del Real Foods actually is able to conserve more than 10,000 gallons of water per week at their facilities!
The sustainable wraps are made of wood pulp, so it is similar to parchment paper although it is stronger. This makes it perfect to help seal in flavor and moisture which is vital for tamales. It is also important to note that these sustainable wraps do not include any chemicals or recycled content. They are also biodegradable, so that is a plus as well.
These new wraps do not affect the flavor or how you prepare these. You can still microwave, steam, or oven-prep these tamales as shown on the instructions.
Del Real Foods Tamales come in 5 different varieties:
- Pork in Red Sauce
- Chicken in Red Sauce
- Chicken in Green Sauce
- Cheese & Green Chili
- Beef in Red Sauce
You can find stores near you that sell Del Real tamales by clicking here. They will be coming out with more flavors this year, so look out for that!
What is Pico de Gallo?
Pico de gallo literally means “rooster beak”, which may not sound appetizing, but I promise it is delicious! It is made of diced tomatoes, onions, and cilantro, mixed together with salt and lime juice.
It is a simple recipe, but it adds so much to other meals, including flautas, eggs, tamales and more! It is perfect if you want to add a touch of freshness to any dish and it is healthy and delicious as well.
The traditional version also has diced jalapenos, which I love. However, if you aren’t a fan of spicy food, you can omit it.
Some people like to add it to their guacamole as well, which gives it an extra flavor that is hard to beat.
How do you make Pico de Gallo?
Pico de gallo is one of the most simple recipes that you can make. To start, you will want to dice the tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and jalapenos if you are using them. Next, combine those ingredients in a bowl and mix well.
The next step is to squeeze the juice from one lime into the bowl and mix together. Finally, add salt to taste before serving alongside your favorite Mexican dishes.
This is one of my favorite recipes, simply because it is so easy and yet adds so much flavor. I love other salsas as well, but a lot of them can take longer to make, so pico de gallo is a great alternative.
It uses fresh ingredients as well, so you can feel good eating it and sharing it with you family.
I would love to know in the comments below how it turned out for you – let me know!
